Let me get my wallet...
How many times a day do the younger people around us teach us something... or better yet - the "wiser" people around us...?
In a day when a dollar is needed for this and that, that the mid 20's to mid 40's seems like every day you are in a miniature globe that whatever power that is, shakes it up, and when the "snow" settles you are standing in the middle of the street with your wallet and you just simply hand out money to every car, person, bus, bike, bug... well okay not bug... but tell me in all honesty you have NEVER felt like that.
So, when all of you readers actually admit that this does happen and the feeling of self loathing passes because you spent $10 extra at Target on something that, now when you look at the receipt, was not an absolute urgent need... well, when that feeling passes. Breathe. Stop. and think back to the last time you had a conversation with a child or a grandparent....about money, explaining what you believe to your core what money matters you are an expert on... yes, you see where I am going... you know you just smiled.
See, the simplistic view of a child countered with that "wise due to years" who each in their time of listening or hearing our "snow globe moment of crisis" simply say: What do you need? Let me get my wallet.
My eight year old asked me to get his wallet the week the earthquake hit Haiti, when asked why he said "I don't need the money to live, they do".
Priceless, breathtaking, overwhelming, and an immediate sense that I had so not been seeing day to day life as life were meant to be.
When something is broken that requires dollars to fix my five year old hearing the concern in my voice says: "Momma, just use my wallet... it has so many coins in it and 5 of those dollars in it, they will make it all better!"... Again the simple understanding that life is bigger than any day to day task
On the other side of the age realm is the "wisdom in years" that money has value, but only in a truly medicinal and superficial manner and that you need to get through life and all that it has to offer - the love, the laughter, the learning, the loss... and that if there is a monetary issue it will work itself out, but the things that really matter in life need more attention, more honesty, and to never waste time on focusing and enjoying the greater things in life.
Hence... as has been the example set for those "wiser" than my years - your example of "What do you need, let me get my wallet"... is so much more than a dollar. The wisdom to value a dollar, but also the true knee deep, downright, in your face truth: to live life, to enjoy the laughter, to embrace kindness, be true with integrity, and to only take things seriously as they are in a person’s core values...
